DSE HABITAT |
Turtle World |
Tour (recom.) |
To give your turtles what the sun makes best - sunlight! You will have to create a simple and temporary DSE habitat. Its best to get a small plastic tub, fill it halfway with water and put in a large stone that juts completely out of the water. Place this in your balcony/verandah or in a doorway such that it gets direct sunlight. On one side of the tub place a book/magazine/towel so as to create some shadow area, where the turtle could go to cool off, in case the sun gets too hot! Transfer your turtles to the DSE habitat as frequently as you can and keep them there. (ideally for 30-45 minutes, every day) This would also be a good time too feed them, as it would mean 1 days waste less in the tank! However, you will have to keep a close vigil on the DSE habitat, for the following: • Turtle escape! If the tubs walls are too low and the turtles have matured, they might just decide to clamber out and explore • The Indian sun can get too hot at times, especially in the summers - so keep a thermometer at hand to measure the temperature and see that it doesn't cross 35oC (95oF) and make sure there is a shaded region, where the turtle can move off to. • If the outside temperature is hovering around 40oC (104oF) or more, we suggest placing the DSE habitat so that along with direct sunlight it also gets a ceiling fan's draught. We found sun-facing doorways to be prefect for this. • Keep a check for prey animals like dogs, cats, and crows. |
